During these uncertain times, it's important to stay as well as possible while also caring for your pets. If you’re hesitant about going to a professional dog groomer, there are grooming tasks you can do right in your Flagstaff apartment. Use the following dog grooming tips to keep your pets in good condition all season long.
Trim Your Dog’s Nails
Your dog’s nails can become long enough to cause discomfort while going on summer walks. Longer nails can also snag on carpeting, furniture, or other surfaces and accidentally tear off. You should trim your dog’s nails when the tips become long enough to touch the floor. Whether you use guillotine-style clippers or scissor-style clippers, make sure you don’t trim nails too much. If your dog has white nails, stop trimming before you reach the pink-colored area called the “quick.” For dark nails, trim a small amount at a time, and stop when you see a pinkish area inside the nail.
Bathe Your Dog
Dogs don’t need frequent baths, but you should give your dog one if they've been playing outside in dirt or mud. Make sure you have all of your bath supplies ready, including dog shampoo, towels, and a brush. Brush your dog’s fur before bathing them to loosen mats and eliminate dead hair. Give your dog a bath in warm water, then dry their fur off as much as possible with towels. This helps prevent your dog from getting your carpets and furniture damp or wet.
Brush Your Dog
Regular brushing can help prevent your dog’s fur from getting matted or tangled. Brushing also helps keep your dog’s fur shiny and healthy. Use the right type of brush, such as a slicker brush for longer fur or a bristle brush for shorter fur.

It's natural to want to include your four-legged friends in your holiday preparations. Pets are family members too, after all. However, many of our favorite festive foods and even plants can be harmful to animals.
As you're decorating your Flagstaff, AZ apartment, baking cookies, and enjoying holiday meals, follow these tips to keep your pet safe.
Foods to Avoid Giving Fido or Fluffy
- Garlic and onions – The Allium plant species, which includes onions and garlic, are highly toxic to dogs and cats. That means no stuffing or potato dishes for your pet.
- Processed pork products – Contrary to popular belief, bacon and ham are not appropriate pet treats. They are extremely difficult for animals to digest and can cause potentially life-threatening pancreatitis.
- Bones – Though they seem like a gourmet treat for your dog, discarded bones from the turkey or ham are unsafe for dogs because they can splinter inside the stomach.
- Macadamia nuts – Nuts have a high fat content, which can cause stomach upset in pets. Macadamias are especially toxic to animals and can cause tremors, vomiting, and even paralysis.
- Baked goods – Xylitol, an artificial sweetener common in commercially baked sweets, has been linked to liver failure and even death in pets.
Don't be discouraged, as there are plenty of other animal-safe foods you can treat your pet to. Perfectly safe (and tasty!) options include plain cooked sweet or regular potatoes, unseasoned cooked carrots and green beans, pumpkin, and unsweetened apples or bananas.
A Note on Poisonous Plants
In addition to food, many homes display traditional red poinsettias or holly boughs during the holidays, but they are unfortunately highly toxic to pets. If ingested, dogs and cats could suffer from severe stomach issues. Feel free to decorate, but keep these plants up high or use artificial ones.
