Dessert Upgrades to Boxed Chocolate Cake Mix

  |     |   Food

If you're like most people, you love a good piece of chocolate cake—and you may feel as if you don't have the culinary skills necessary to craft a gourmet-style chocolate cake in your kitchen. Fortunately, you don't have to have formal training as a chef to create a luscious chocolate cake in your apartment in Flagstaff. You can easily use a boxed chocolate cake mix as the foundation for a dessert fit to be served in a five-star restaurant. Here's what you can do:

S'mores Cake

Everyone loves s'mores. Not only do these melted marshmallow treats taste delicious, they conjure up carefree thoughts of campfires and starry skies. Simply add flour and sugar to your boxed cake mix, stir in mini-marshmallows, and combine with eggs, sour cream, and water. Place in slow cooker on the low setting until it's 165 degrees inside. Spoon marshmallow cream over the cake and sprinkle with graham cracker and chocolate pieces. Let it cool and serve with a spoon.

Creme de Menthe Cake

If you love the combination of chocolate and mint, you can't go wrong with this creme de menthe cake. You'll need a boxed chocolate cake mix, some creme de menthe, crushed mint chocolate candies, and vanilla frosting, and fudge flavored ice cream topping.

Prepare the cake mix per package instructions but replace one-quarter of the water with creme de menthe, allow it to cool, and frost with heated fudge frosting. Combine vanilla frosting with a tablespoon of creme de menthe and add a couple of drops of green food coloring, if desired. Frost the tops and the sides with this mixture and sprinkle the crushed mint candy over the top.
